Day 6 – The Magnificat

[Note from Tilly: Finding myself pregnant at Christmas for the third time, I’ve committed to do a short advent devotional each weekday of December . They will all be labeled by date and can be found together under the “Advent” subject category.]

2018 Advent Series – Day 6

Today I wanted to spend time meditating on the Magnificat, Mary’s song of praise. She sings this song in response to Elizabeth’s lifegiving words of confirmation that the child in Mary’s womb is, in fact, “the fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord” (Luke 1:45).

I wanted to rewrite Mary’s song into my own words as a means of becoming better acquainted with her meaning:

My soul extols and seeks to amplify the glory of the Lord,

and my heart is full of joy in God (who is my Savior!),

because he has noticed me, his servant, even in my lowly estate.

Look! From now on my children’s children’s childrenso on foreverwill say I’m a blessed woman;

for God-the-mighty has done great things for me,

and his name is holy.

And his mercy is for those who fear him

from generation to generation.

His arm is strong and he shows it off;

he’s used the inner thoughts of the proud to scatter them;

he’s tossed the mighty down from their thrones

and in the meantime, lowly people like me have been exalted;

hungry people he fills with good things

and rich people he sends away empty.

In remembrance of his own mercy

he has helped Israel his servant,

just like he said to our fathers,

to Abraham and to Abraham’s

children’s children’s children, and so on forever.

Father,

give us eyes to see and ears to hear the miracle that you wrought for all of Israel, to the offspring of Abraham forever.  You have done great things for your servants… you call them children. Mighty God! Kind Father! You from whom all blessings flow, we praise you.
